Shine a Light on Injury Prevention

St. Christopher's joined the Injury Free Coalition for Kids (IFCK) in launching the first-ever annual National Injury Prevention Day on November 18, 2020. We are committed to raising awareness about the significance of childhood injury and advocate for prevention. Doctors, nurses, and community outreach personnel at Level I Trauma Centers around the country are joining forces to address the injuries most prevalent in their communities. City landmarks across the country will shine green lights as a reminder to keep safety top of mind.

Here in the Philadelphia region, St. Christopher's and Reading Hospital are the only hospitals to host a local chapter and Injury Free Site. Here is what's happening:

  • There will be a live one-hour Twitter chat at 1:00 pm EST to discuss the urgent need to prevent injuries and how everyone can play a role. Join the conversation using #BeInjuryFree.
  • The Ben Franklin Bridge, Boathouse Row, PECO Crown Lights, Philadelphia Eagles' Lincoln Financial Field, the Philadelphia Union MLS stadium, and the Ronald McDonald House have signed on to raise awareness by lighting up in green on the evening of the 18th, joining St. Christopher's Hospital for Children and Reading Hospital.
  • We are distributing more than 600 gift bags to children with safety tips and information, focusing on falls, burns, pedestrian safety, and more.

Philadelphia Mayor James F. Kenney signed a proclamation designating November 18, 2020 as National Injury Prevention Day.  The City of Philadelphia’s Injury Prevention Program works to create a safe environment for all Philadelphia residents by reducing gun violence, promoting safety, and addressing the factors that contribute to violence and injuries.

The Injury Free Coalition for Kids is a national program comprised of hospital-based and community-oriented programs whose efforts are anchored in research, education and advocacy. Currently, the Coalition includes more than 30 sites, each housed in the trauma center of their participating institution.

St. Christopher’s is Leading the Pack on Injury Prevention

Did you know injuries are the leading cause of death and disability for U.S. children up to age 18? St. Christopher’s has a long history of community outreach, visiting schools and community centers to share a wide range of safety information and programs. We are hosting an Injury Free Site because safety and prevention dovetails with our mission to treat the whole child with comprehensive services that break the cycles of food insecurity, violence, injury and childhood illness. We have partnered with Injury Free Coalition for Kids since 2005 and our Injury Prevention Day efforts will be led by Rochelle Thompson, MS, CPST, our Injury Prevention Coordinator in the Trauma Department.
